JOSE GUMBS NAMED NEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR!!
Jose Gumbs Named NEC Defensive Player Of The Year
We are extremely proud of Jose Gumbs, a former Queens Falcon.  Jose  Gumbs was named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year.  An excerpt from the article, which can be found online:

West Long Branch, N.J.- Monmouth safety/linebacker Jose Gumbs (Queens, N.Y./Hebron Academy) has been named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while six total Hawks were selected to All-Conference teams, the league announced Monday afternoon.

"I am happy that so many of our players were rewarded for our hard work by ebing named to the all-conference team," said head coach Kevin Callahan. "It's great to have Jose's efforts on the field recognized in this way by the coaches in the NEC. He is a dominant player for us and is very deserving of this recognition.

Gumbs was one of five Hawks to earn First Team All-NEC honors, with fellow safety Kendall Haley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel), running back David Sinisi (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), guard Shawn Wright (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha Catholic) and tackle Kevin Sterling (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) also earning first team nods. Defensive tackle David Kennedy (Fort Lee, N.J./Patterson Catholic) was name to the second team.

JV Football Hosts Queens Falcons

The Queens Falcons and LC junior varsity scrimmage on Pratt FieldThe Loomis Chaffee football program played host this past weekend to the Queens Falcons U-17 and U-16 teams. The Falcons are a member of the American Youth Football League in New York City.

"The team's head coach, Tim Cavanaugh, had not brought his players to the Island in recent years, so we were pleased to have his group return with this year's squad of student-athletes from Queens, New York," said LC Director of Athletics Bob Howe '80.

The Queens Falcons team gathers during a Loomis Chaffee campus tour

It was a perfect day for football with moderate temperatures and sunny skies as the Loomis JV squad ran through its plays one last time before the regular season begins. The visitors had the opportunity to scrimmage Loomis Chaffee's team, stay for lunch, tour the school, and talk about what life is like on campus with head varsity doach Chuck Reid and his coaching staff.

In 1997 Stephen G. Hoffman and Tim Cavanaugh started an organization called the Run To Daylight Program. They had the idea of providing players from the Queens Falcons football organization with the opportunity to attend some of the top boarding schools in the Northeast. Tragically, Stephen Hoffman was among those lost in the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001. Tim has successfully kept this worthy program afloat and is now joined by fellow coach Joseph Marino.

The mission of the Run To Daylight Program is to help inner-city young men secure a top-quality education not typically available to families of limited financial means. The program concentrates on finding candidates that are not just athletes, but good students as well. These student athletes are matched with schools that can offer them an education outside of the inner-city public school system.

Loomis Chaffee would like to thank Coach Cavanaugh and Coach Marino and the entire Queens Falcons organization for coming to the campus and sharing a great day with us all.

What's NEW with the Run To DayLight Program?

The Run To Daylight Program continues to put committed young men, who have tested and been accepted, into excellent schools.  On the left are pictures of several students who have been accepted to top schools.

Jonathon Schultze and Victor Howell Graduate From Lawrence Academy

These two young men are a by-products of the Run To Daylight Education Foundation/Queens Falcons Football Program. What is so significant about this achievement is that Schulze had not attended school for 1 year and was heading down the wrong path. Victor had a GPA of .08 when they came to the program.

Through a series of small miracles, they found their way to the field and each of these young men will be attending college. Schultze will attend American International College and Victor will attend Staten Island College.

Congratulations, Jonathon Schultze and Victor Howell, on your achievements!!

Danny Chung
has accepted a Scholarship from Middlesex School and Frankie Benavides has accepted a Scholarship from Taft School where he will be attending in the Fall.

Also not pictured but will also be attending Taft in the fall is Jordan Stone.  Jose Garcia, another candidate, will be attending the Hebron School. Adam Wilcweski has also been awarded a scholarship, locally, to Poly Prep in Brooklyn.

All of these young men played for the Midget Team, which is coached by Neil O'Donnell, Ed Maley, Mike Miller and Matt Maley. This is a direct result of the Run to Daylight program started by Stephen Hoffman and Coach Tim Cavanaugh.  Congratulations boys, we are extremely proud of you.
We wish you the best at these schools and know that you will continue to make us proud of the amazing young men that you are.

If a parent or player wishes to send in photos of a child that has been awarded a scholarship, please send the photo in by clicking here and sending an email to our webmaster.

Coach Cavanaugh continues to make Dreams come true for these fine young men. We hope with the continued support of our sponsors and other people's donations that we can send more and more kids away each year through the Run to Daylight Program.   If you wish to make a donation to the Run To Daylight Program, please click here.

What is the Run To DayLight Program?

The mission of The Run to Daylight Program is to help our inner city young men secure a top quality education not normally available to families of limited financial means. The program concentrates on finding candidates that are not just athletes but good students as well. These student-athletes are matched with schools that can offer a better education than normally found in the inner city public school system. Basically, their athletic ability helps them to achieve a quality education and opens doors to them normally reserved for more affluent families.

What's the history of RTDL?
In 1997 Stephen G. Hoffman and Timothy Cavanaugh started The Run to Daylight Program. They had the idea of providing the players from the Queens Falcons Football Organization with the opportunity to attend some of the top boarding schools in the northeast as well as local private schools in the New York City Area. Tragically, Stephen Hoffman was among those lost in the World Trade Center disaster during the events of September 11th, 2001. Tim is now joined by another coach from the Queens Falcons program, Joseph Marino.

Run To Daylight Academic ProgramThe first candidate in The Run to Daylight Program was a young man named Taylor Sele. He was accepted to the Preparatory school Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts in September of 1999. Taylor has since finished his successful prep-school career as the state of Massachusetts' third ranked high school prospect and one of the tops in the nation. Taylor was then courted by Notre Dame, Maryland, and Kentucky before deciding to attend Boston College. As of the fall of 2002 he was red-shirted and we all anticipate a stellar collegiate career to come.

Since Taylor's acceptance to Lawrence Academy, the program has helped upwards of 35 other young men in fulfilling their dreams of attending these prominent academic institutions.

Run To Daylight Academic ProgramDirection of RTDL
Each year The Run to Daylight Program hopes to be more successful than the last. This year alone 18 former players will be heading to some of the following well-respected schools: Choate Rosemary Hall, Poly Prep, New Hampton, Lawrence Academy, St. Thomas Moore, Avon Old Farms, Holy Cross, St. Francis Prep, and Pomfret Academy. The list grows every day.

Our long term vision for the program is to one day be able to send 50 student-athletes per year to these prominent boarding schools. Eventually we would like to grow in our scope to include a building, which would serve as an after school tutoring facility for the SAT, SSAT, ISEE exams and tutoring for individual subjects.

While our commitment to our kids is unquestionable, we cannot do all of this alone. We rely on tax-deductible donations to our league to survive financially. The registration fees we charge basically cover our operating expenses. We will never turn down a child who wants to play football even if he cannot pay the registration fee. We have a saying: “We'll supply the equipment if you supply the commitment”. Well, we are asking for a commitment from you, however large, in order to keep assisting these young men and to continue our resounding successes.
